Pay Attention to These Signs of an AC in Disrepair

animated-checklist-on-clipboardHave you ever noticed that your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be working quite right? Maybe you’re tempted to put off calling for repairs. If your air conditioner is still running, just not as well as it could be, this is understandable. You want to save your summer vacation money, after all! But unfortunately, delaying repairs could leave you with an even costlier problem, and potentially even the need for premature system replacement.

We encourage our customers to take care of their air conditioning systems as soon as they realize they need repairs. But how do you know when this might be the case? We ask this knowing that you are probably not an air conditioning expert–that’s our job! However, it’s a good idea to know the basics, and to know the signs that you just may have an air conditioner in disrepair. Read on to learn what they are!

The System Isn’t Keeping You As Cool As It Should

Is your air conditioner blowing out air, but that air is lukewarm? This can be the sign of a couple of different problems. First off, you should assess it to see if the problem is that the air isn’t cold or if the airflow is weak. The latter may be as simple of a fix as replacing the air filter. This air filter, that comes standard with your HVAC systems, is in place to protect those systems from dust, dirt, and other debris that can get inside and damage its components. When it gets too clogged up though, it restricts airflow. So check this, first!

If it is in fact that your air conditioner isn’t blowing out cool air, then you might be experiencing a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is the chemical substance that actually makes the cooling process possible. Upon manufacturing, your air conditioner is supplied with enough to ideally last its whole lifespan. If your system is lowing refrigerant, it’s a real problem, as it can damage the compressor and cause other issues, potentially even leading to premature system replacement.

Your Energy Bills Are Higher Than Average

Take a look at your energy bills from this same time last year. Now if you can, ask a neighbor or two how much they are paying for similar air conditioner use. Are your bills a lot higher than either? This is a sign that something in your home is working inefficiently, and it could very well be your air conditioner to blame. After all, HVAC systems account for about half of all the energy use in any given home. Don’t let your comfort and your budget suffer! Give us a call and we’ll head out and inspect your system, locating where repair needs exist.

The System Is Making Odd Noises

No air conditioner is ever going to be 100% silent, but if you hear something that’s outside of the everyday operational noises coming from your air conditioner, it’s time to give us a call! It can be the sign of a loose component, something wearing down like the motor bearings for the blower fan, or it may even be a refrigerant leak. You won’t know until you call a pro!
